How Can Weed Help Me Sleep?
Girl, we see you. We’re exhausted too! Launching a sustainable online weed website is no easy feat. Our team pulled together and we’re excited to announce that the Ecomeds site is officially live. After the long launch process, we could use some rest!
Sleep is so important for both your physical and mental health, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy to catch the Zzz’s. There are lots of sleeping pills and gummies out there with melatonin and other “sedative hypnotics.” There’s no doubt that these pills work, but sometimes they work a little too well leaving consumers with a foggy ‘hangover’ the next morning. Not to mention all the ridiculous chemicals in those gnarly sleeping pills (we’re looking at you Unisom.)
Chronic Sleep
It’s no secret that weed can help with sleep, but it can be a bit more complicated than that. With so many products out there, it helps to know what you’re looking for. Whether you’re a seasoned cannabis user or new to this awesome world, it’s good to study up on which cannabinoids and strains give you the high you’re looking for.
“How Have I Not Heard of CBN Before?”
An up-and-comer in the industry is cannabinol aka CBN. Cannabinol is made when THC is exposed to excessive heat and light until it turns into CBN. In other words, the THC is cooked out of it leaving behind sedative properties.
CBN has a special ability to work alongside other compounds in the cannabis plant like aromatic terpenes, also known as “ The Entourage Effect.” CBN has anti-inflammatory properties which is why scientists think it aids specifically with anxiety, appetite and sleep.
Unfortunately, studies on CBN are still preliminary, so most of what we know is based on people sharing their experiences and personal trials. But don’t fret, sometimes anecdotal evidence is the most reliable coming from people we know and trust. The main side effects of CBN are drowsiness, sleepiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
CBN is fairly new, but can be found in many different marijuana products already. Similar to CBD it’s most commonly found in oils, capsules, edibles, vapes, and topicals.
CBD & CBN (They’re Besties!)
CBD and CBN are both cannabinoids from the same plant, but they aren’t interchangeable. They have different chemical structures and varying effects. CBD has been around a lot longer with solid research backing its effects. CBD is most popular as a natural remedy for aches, anxiety and stimulating your appetite.
In our bodies we have a thing called the Endocannabinoid System which is a series of molecules and receptors throughout the body. It’s connected to our nervous system and it affects our mood, sleep and digestion, which is where CBD and CBN come in. They lead to feelings of relaxation without the intoxicating high of THC. Combining CBD and CBN activates this system in all the best ways.
What’s Best for Sleep? Terpenes, Strains and More
It’s pretty common knowledge that THC can help with sleep. Smoking a J or popping a sleeping edible before bed is a part of a lot more people’s routines than you think. Studies show that THC not only helps users fall asleep, but also helps them stay asleep. The only downside is sleeping high can sometimes prevent REM sleep which is the stage we dream in. REM sleep is important because it helps the part of our brain that we use to learn and retain knowledge/memories. That’s why finding the right products and doses is important when mixing sleep with weed.
Terpenes & Strains Specific for Sleep
We know terpenes as the inviting molecules in cannabis that give off specific aromas and flavors. Terpenes can also be responsible for some of the health benefits associated with cannabis. The top three terpenes to look for when you want to get some sleep are: terpinolene, myrcene, and caryophyllene.
For sleep, it’s recommended you start with low-dose products that aren’t too strong. We want to gently drift off to sleep, not knock the eff out! Starting with a 1:1 ratio is always a good option. Most users prefer indica-based strains because indica properties tend to have a more gradual calm than sativa. Some of the most popular strains for sleep include: Hindu Kush, Granddaddy Purple, Harlequin, Grape Ape, Girl Scout Cookies, Pink Kush and ACDC.
Fair warning: not everyone will experience the same effects! Our best advice is to start with low doses and with products you’re familiar with or are recommended to you by reliable sources. Speaking of which, here at Ecomeds, we have an excellent variety of products to have you sleeping like a baby:
